Comic Analysis

Beano Brief History:
Beano was first published by D.C. Thompson and Co, on the 30th of July 1938 a couple of months before the beginning of the 2nd world war. It was publish on alternating weeks with the Dandy comic during the world war but fell short on ink supplies so was put on hold during the world war. The beano was resumed in 1949 and is still being printed now. In the late 1980s Beano Specials was published which was a seasonly published comic which ran up until 1992 when it was replaced by Beano Superstars which ran for 121 issues ending in 2002. In 2003 Beano specials returned as a seasonal issue again but was soon replaced by BeanoMAX in 2007 which is still being published today.
The Beano has had several editors within its time the first one being George Moonie from 1938 when it was first published till 1959, the 2nd being Harold Cramond from 1959 - 1984, then Euan Kerr took over until 2006 who then handed to position to the present editor Alan Digby. Their has been rumors that Alan Digby has retired leaving the position to Michael Stirling; but this can't be confirmed.

Artists Of Beano:
Beano has number of comic strips within it within various artists, but I'm going to mainly focus on dennnis the menace. Dennis the menace was initially designed by Davey Law the artist and Editor Ian Chrisholm and making its first appearance in a Beano issue on 17th March 1951 and is the longest running strip in the comic still contuning today, The name Dennis the menace was inspired by the song 'Dennis The Menace In Venice'. The design of Dennis was was kind of out of luck as the Chrisholm would tell Law what he would want this character to look like but Law couldn't quite get the what Chrisholm wanted, so Chrisholm quickly sketched a design of Dennis on a cigarette packet and told Law to go sketch it up properly, Law did adapt the design slightly but the messy haircut, knobbly knees and a menacing scowl. I can't find anything about whether the design of him was influenced by something, but it looks to me that Dennis The Menace was based upon the teenage fashion at the time black and red clothes and a messy haircut.

Comic Documentary Analysis:
The first superhero comic book character was released in 1932 and it was Superman he posessed super powers and fighted, he was then followed by Batman which was first published in 1939, he was a hero that protected the city from crime but did not posess super powers. Then during the war Captain America was released he was hero that helped America defeat the Geramsn and Japanese during the world war.
